Survival Guide

We care about the small Voluntary Groups which other blogs overlook. You don't have to be a well paid Exec in a fancy suit to find value here. We promise you relevant articles, good reporting & hopefully a few laughs along the way.

Volunteers & Staff, How To Sort The Good From The Useless

Would you like to work extremely hard for the benefit of others and in return receive little pay or recognition?

If you’ve raised your hand congratulations, you’re a great person and probably already work at a Voluntary Organisation. However we’re sure that you like many small to medium sized Voluntary Organisations across the UK, could do with another pair of hands to help lighten the load. You’re not alone, most of the organisations we talk to are starved of capable volunteers and staff able to undertake tasks ranging from sitting on  a management committee to helping out with admin and events.

End Of An Era…

Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford University 2005. Transcript via TechCrunch

We’re going to take his advice.

At the end of this month we are going to cease operating our bid writing service. As this is our most enquired about and requested service you may be wondering why we have come to this decision.

Is Your Business Plan A Very Expensive Paperweight?

This will all make sense later...

A good friend of the company just visited our office, bringing with her a ten year old invoice her friend had recently rediscovered. It amounted to £10,000 for a number of consultancy services including writing a business plan. The consultant had charged a small Voluntary Organisation with only one full time staff member an obscene £2,500 for the business plan section alone.

This royally pissed us off. The consultant had charged £320 per day for 8 days. What annoyed us even more is that the document was overly lengthy and written entirely in consultancy speak. As a result the organisation was unable to understand it or act upon it. So It lay on a desk for 10 years, never to be touched again. A very expensive paperweight.

Tech Recommendation: Google Chrome

We believe that a good web browser should be;

  1. Uncluttered.
  2. Easy to use.
  3. Always up to date with the latest technologies  & security.

As we travel around the UK visiting Voluntary Organisations we’re appalled to see that so many of you are still using outdated technology. The biggest offenders are Internet Explorer 6 & 7, known to all as the enemies of security, speed and the modern internet.

We recommend using Google’s free browser Google Chrome to speed up your office, protect your PC’s and enhance your web experience.

Community Action Against Crime Innovation Fund

This £5 million fund was launched to give you an opportunity to try out whatever wacky, untested new ideas you have that would positively impact upon the levels and types of crime in your community.

After the recent riots we’re sure many of you have ideas to pour into this. (see article: Safeguards Against Fire in our Streets) Even if you don’t intend to apply we’d like you to leave a comment explaining your idea and why you think it will work. You never know it might just inspire someone else to get involved.

Safeguards Against Fire In Our Streets

In recent times we have seen massive cuts to;

  1. Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
  2. Youth centres and activities.
  3. Charities that work with young people & their families to provide intervention & education.

Let’s be clear, cuts to the above services have not caused the wave of anarchy seen on streets up and down our country. These riots spread from;

A)     The fact that people young & old saw firsthand that the police have become ineffectual and incapable of keeping order.
B)     The fact that too many parents have lost or ceded control to their children.
C)     The postcode/citywide competition or game to see who could be the “baddest” and cause the most havoc.
